Families are the nuclei of society and are repeatedly placed at the centre of literary narratives: However, families can also be the nucleus of misunderstandings, conflicts and even physical and psychological violence. This seminar aims to examine conflicts in families and to take a closer look at how they influence the characters and their lives over decades. Conflicts can take very different forms and can be both very eloquent and very quiet. The novel "Everything I never told you" by Celeste Ng shows how the failure to express wishes, thoughts and ideas can lead to a toxic family atmosphere. In the novel "My Name is Lucy Barton" by Elisabeth Strout, a late conversation between mother and daughter takes centre stage, showing a problematic childhood in a dysfunctional family. Lucy's mother was unable to protect her and her siblings from the father's mercurial mood swings and violent nature. This seminar aims to examine the constellations of characters in both texts and to consider how the smallest unit of society shapes people from the very beginning.
Textgrundlage:
- Celeste Ng Everything I Never Told You, 2014,
- Elisabeth Strout My Name is Lucy Barton, 2016.
Beide Romane sind auch in deutscher Übersetzung erschienen. Celeste Ng Everything I Never Told You sollte zu Beginn des Seminars bereits gelesen sein.
